What is El Niño?
El Niño is a weather pattern which causes warmer temperatures, higher winds often causing drought in the east and increased rainfall in the west. NIWA explains more.
NIWA has confirmed El Niño has arrived, New Zealand can expect dramatic temperature fluctuations including chances of record high temperatures and drought, with predicted rainfall to be below normal for the North Island. NIWA has now developed and released its very own drought forecasting tool, displaying week-to-week predictions of rainfall, dryness, and potential drought 35 days into the future, which will be invaluable for our primary industry sector and all New Zealanders.

What can we do?
Coming into the drier summer months in the face of El Niño, we can practice water conservation and ensure our rainwater harvesting systems are functioning to their full potential, see our news post Rainwater Harvesting to find out more.
